Shearwater – High-performance cruiser

Shearwater, a stunning 57 foot carbon electric propulsion high-performance cruiser was launched in Sydney in 2018 after a three-year build.

Kit Carlier Design worked from concept phase to installation on the interior fit out of the project with the legendary German (Mani) Frers and innovative McConaghy Boats, Australia.

Commissioned by a client who ‘knew his stuff’ and expected the best, the aspirational, multi-faceted project was guided by the principle that a cruising yacht shouldn’t have to compromise on performance.

“The key structural elements of this extreme-performance yacht, including the ability to be sailed single-handed, were blended with a soft palette of luxurious and natural interior finishings. This included the pairing of natural teak flooring with rich, walnut cabinetry and matte-finished carbon features,” says Kit Carlier, Director of Kit Carlier Design.

“In addition, the large deck hatches let natural light pour into the open plan layout, which boasts a customisable configuration, specifically tailored to the client’s entertaining style.”

Every aspect of the interior design was carefully considered to ensure weight was kept to an absolute minimum. Unnecessary weight was removed by replacing typically heavy items with custom carbon alternatives for areas such as vanities and toilets.

With a key goal being to minimise the impact on the environment, the yacht features two high-tech electric sail-drives with hydro-regeneration capacity, solar panels on the coach roof, and a waste treatment system.
